Today instead of reading Notes from Underground we saw a video,
which resembled the ideas that Dostoyevsky expressed in his writing. In the
video a man from England and another man named Bill Nye the science guy, who is
known for solving science experiments, debate about the volatility of the
belief behind the bible. The English man is defending the bible and says that
the bible and science correlate with one another while Bill is clearly denying
that claim through clear concrete evidence. The debate is strange though
because although it is evident that the English man is wrong the fact that he
is English levels off the debate with Bill because Bill is not a great speaker
but he provides us with some great points. Some of the things that the English
man says is clearly absurd and if you listen closely he can only back them up
with the information that is stated in his website. The English mans notion
about the world also goes back to Dostoyevsky’s idea of the wall - he is stuck and cannot think beyond what
the bible says. He cannot look towards new ideas. He just tries and finds
reasonable explanations that will convince people that his beliefs are correct,
which they are clearly not.
