Today we spent most of our discussion taking on what was the
real human advantage. Basically, I think our advantage is our soul. Our soul doesn’t
only give us freedom of choice and thinking, but it also gives us emotions
which can be a huge factor in our decisions. The fact that we have a soul
differentiates us from the simple man and makes each one of us a unique
individual, as opposed to the animals that all have the same instincts and
behave pretty much the same. Like everything Dostoyevsky says though, our advantage
is also ironic because our soul and emotions can also harm us and get in the
way of us making the right choices. For example, the topic discussed today of
why people smoke. People enjoy smoking, and they have the ability to say “fuck
it, so what it if it hurts me” and so they go ahead and smoke and bring
pleasure to themselves. What I am trying to get at is that our advantage is our
soul and the fact that we give it more importance than our physical body.
