Humans have an advantage over other living organisms: the ability to act independtly and to ones own interest. We do things based on the fact that we can. Evolution claims that we act in our own self-interest to better ourselves but in reality we do things to prove to ourselves that we have control over what we do. We smoke or drink too much even though we know it will eventually harm us because it's how we choose to live our life and no one can deny someone of having their own free will. Dostoevsky points out that we harm ourselves to feel semething or to prove to others that we can. There is nothing stopping us from what we want to achieve if we have control over out actions, or we want to believe we have control.
