Tuesday

I think that what Dostoyevsky was trying to convey in today's reading was the concept of "free will'. The idea that humans are able to do whatever they want when given two choices, not taking into account the role that the various institutions play in their grip on society, is what separates mankind from any other species. The fact that I can pick up a bottle of vodka knowing full well that it can and may harm me, and drink from it, or the fact that someone can knowingly use cocaine solidifies this idea. In my opinion, we are an incredibly selfish species, we don't care about what we do with the planet, we don't care about what happens to future generations (see our national debt), we ultimately care about ourselves and therefore we do what makes US feel good and what makes US happy. I don't think that we truly care about evolution and the fact that something is harmful for us, we are eternally in this "sophomoric" state of mind of thinking that we are untouchable, and that is ultimately what ends up killing many of us.
