Glorifying the anti hero
I found it interesting to discuss how suffering is often perceived as virtue. The most immediate origins of this idea seem to be in religion. For example, Jesus's suffering is seen as the ultimate sacrifice and act of selflessness. But why does society advocate selflessness and not selfish strength? And why are we so ashamed to be called selfish? This is yet another way we seem to be cheating evolution. The weak and the selfless are seen as spiritually superior and morally correct. Those who are strong and achieve things for themselves are looked down upon. This relates well to Atlas Shrugged. Those who worked for themselves were outcast and mocked, while in reality they were the only ones holding up the world. The idea is compelling- do we support doing nothing over doing something? Do we put the anti-hero on a pedestal? I am starting to realize that, many times, we do.
