Although the underground man said
that we are creatures of formula and mathematics, he later contradicts this
statement by saying that humans fear definite, and complete answers. We build
things up only to destroy them because creating is what keeps us busy and sane.
Once we are finished creating, what do we have left to do? Humans embrace the
walls that are put before us, but we also shun them, because if we attain these
walls, we will become lost and bored. As creatures with the ability to choose
our own path, we sometimes choose the more “disadvantageous” one knowing that
it may hurt us because we know we can; because we want to make a point. But
other times, we fear this unknown path because we need answers and we need a destination.
These conclusions are all paradoxical in themselves, and in a way they are all
true. There are no real conclusions that we can make because all of them, one
way or another, make sense and can be proved.
