During class today, I thought it was somewhat unfair to
compare ourselves to other animals in order to determine why humans
smoke/drink/eat badly when they know the repercussions. It seems like we are
stretching our analysis a little to far to make up a bullshit idea. Humans have
minds while animals just have brains. Well, now, after doing a little bit of
research I discovered that human brains weigh less and the cerebral cortex or
nerve center is just slightly more complex than other animals’ brains. In class,
we talked about how humans think they are immortal. I wanted to discover where
the idea of an immortal soul stems from, thinking it had religious origins but
it turns out it is from the philosophy of Plato. Of course, the spirit in man
has theological origins. I think that
humans harm themselves because they are looking for spiritual answers about
themselves or the human race in general. Over the past centuries, we have
experienced great advancement and progress while suffering from unfortunate
evils and troubles like the desire for war, cigarettes, alcohol ect. We are looking for something spiritual in
nature that can’t be found.
