Mankind's advantage over animals is that we have the freedom to act just because we can. However, this isn't always good. We can choose to smoke, drink and do drugs which goes against every instinct to survive but we still carry these actions out as a way to show our freedom and ability to do what pleases us. When thinking about it logically and rationally, it makes no sense for humans to do things that put their survival at risk although I can't claim that I haven't done anything hazardous or claim that I won't ever do anything hazardous in the future. Even with the reason and justification that we do things because "we can", it still makes no sense to me. I think that at this point in time, drinking and smoking and all of the life threatening things we do have become a social expectation so it almost seems natural and normal to do so. Animals don't have to social and interact like we do.
