Dostoevsky sarcastically discusses the claim that human
nature is good under the condition that they understand their purpose or their “advantage”
in life. He says that people who think that people only need to understand
their life advantage and then they will good are naïve and innocent. People
tend to do things that go against what’s logical or best for them. Our survival
instinct tells us to eat healthy, take part in risk free activities, and exercise
to maintain our bodies and mind. Instead
people smoke, do drugs, eat unhealthy food, and take part in risky activities.
Dostoevsky claims that this is the one true advantage for people over all over
animals. We are able to go against our instinct and use our free will to do
things that are completely illogical. We are able to make them logical in our heads
and go against the grain because we can.
