Dostoyevsky introduces another
important and interesting idea that I just did not uncover until today when we
read in class. Dostoyevsky says that human beings are irrational which in truth
is a real advantage. Well the reason people are not rational is because people
do things that are not in their best interest – smoke, drink, etc. The only way
human beings can be rational is if they always do things that are in the best
of their interest. Like an animal perhaps, they do what they need to do to
survive.
The real question behind all this –
is there a true advantage behind being irrational/doing things that do not fit
our best interest? I think there is because that is what separates us from
every other living thing on this planet. That makes us unique because we can have fun
with it and benefit from it at the same time. Building a large building may not
seem rational, but it does look nice. Partying may also seem irrational, but it
is a time where everyone can enjoy his or herself.
