To have amour prope,
you need to respect yourself and think yourself equal to everyone else around
you. Basically have the self-esteem to look every man in the eye. That’s why
the “wall” to stop the raging bull wanting to get out from within you is vital.
If you let yourself go and you let out your Neanderthal, natural side, people
will see you unfit for society and you will become an outcast. That wall is
just enough to make you seem like you respect enough to counter challenge your
challengers, but it avoids any conflict that would name someone a victor, and
maybe that someone is not you. I’ve seen it in action at parties. Rarely does
talking smack result in an actual fight (unless the fighters are total
hotheads). Dostoyevsky is saying here that revenge is an act of the non-conscious
man who acts animalistic and disregards all his modern society-taught skills.
