I discovered that I was supposed to comment on
one of the blogs from Monday’s discussion since I was not here yesterday to
participate. After reading Camille’s blog, I noticed that we had similar views
on the underground man’s internal struggle to feel any positive emotions. From
the beginning I felt as though the narrator was battling his emotions versus
his logic. His hyperconsciousness makes him guilty and ashamed when he feels
anything that is “positive” or good. Though he can be impulsive, and does have
normal feelings like normal people, his extremely high level of intelligence
immediately halts these emotions and convinces him that he should be regretful
of them. But we do get a sense of his soft side the few times he makes them
visible to the readers. The underground man constantly fights his emotions
against his intellect and cannot determine which is “”correct.” His high
consciousness limits his ability to feel without instantaneously lamenting it
