Wendell Pfeffer
I would have expected Notes from Underground to unravel and
become more understandable as I read further into the book, but the book
actually continues to become more difficult to understand. I continue have to
re read some paragraphs 3 times in order to have some comprehension on what he
is saying. Apart from the difficulty of the book Fyodor has some really
interesting points especially when he characterizes a man of intelligence and
good consciousness and those with acute consciousness. Fyodor states over and
over that he wants to become a man of action (acute consciousness) and not a
man of intelligence because those men that have little consciousness take
action and are successful while people like him are lazy. Another point to be
made about this is his idea of revenge. Those men with acute consciousness take
vengeance rapidly because what they think they are doing is for the good of
society – crime and punishment. While people with good consciousness and
intelligence will be trapped and think about the events that will happen during
or after if they decide to take vengeance in which the will never do. He wants
to be a man of action, which is strange though because even though he wants to
become that type of person he is trash talking them at the same time. For
example he says that this type of person is a mouse. I believe he does this to
make himself feel better, which is not a surprise because he states it earlier
in the book.
I
really cannot wait to finish the first half of the book because I am tired of
having to listen to his inner thoughts.
