NFTU 4

Well, my feelings towards this book went back to its original state of dislike. It's frustrating to see a man so spiteful that he ruins his one chance at true love. Someone like him is bound to be lonely for the rest of his life, and the whole time he was saying that he didn't want Liza to come, he was actually dying for her come because he wanted to love her. He wanted to have a future with her. The point that I understood was that, not only was he spiteful to the rest of the world, but he was probably the most spiteful to himself because he ruined his only chances at true happiness.  The sad part about all of this is, that although we may not be like this 24/7 like this man, we do indeed behave in a way that deprives ourself of things we yearn for and wish for. The grand gesture of spite was putting the money in Liza's hand though. But I just wonder, if he knew he loved her and that she was wiling to love him, why do such a horrific act against someone that is only looking for change. This may also be a metaphor that if we act like this man and always hesitate to act and if we're afraid of those good feelings that have a chance of ending up in incredible pain, we may see our while lives pass by and realize that it is all over and I did nothing for myself.
