How Much Does Free Will Cost?

In Chapter seven, Dostoyevsky explains that the strange advantage that leads to man's self-destruction is actually free will. Once granted complete free will, men expect their free will to be completely free from all constraints, including reason. This, of course, cannot be allowed. If complete free will was granted to all men, then the world would simply implode due to the chaotic activity that would ensue or the possible the want of activity that could cause civilization to crumble since no one is now willing to support it. What this means is once complete free will is granted, the first possibility of what might happen next is the very real idea of war. Men will turn on each other based on beliefs, politics, money, power, etc. and we would exterminate ourselves ultimately. The second possibility that could result is mans laziness and lack of will to continue working for a nation they never truly appreciated. Evidently, free will comes with a price since nothing ever did come free. If free will is to be granted, you must still act within the realm of reason or else the world will collapse on itself. To help society to survive with some free will granted to the masses, some rules must be implemented to protect us from ourselves. However, the rules that were introduced by people like Stalin and Hitler were unnecessarily brutal and torturous. We must form a balance between free will and reason in order to create a society that can thrive without the threat of implosion standing at its doorstep.
