Well what a waste of time. I have been arguing with a raving lunatic who thinks himself a jester. Before I continued to read, I thought that it might be a huge waste and almost put down the book but I began to read chapter ten and stumbled on something interesting; the Underground Man tries to reject the ideas behind utopian fascination on crystal palaces and their representation of an indestructible edifice that epitomizes rationality. However, later in this very same chapter the Underground Man takes back the harsh words he said about the utopians and their ideals and actually states that he had no idea why he said what he said. So, this means that he is actually in agreement with the utopians, since the author was apart of their movement. In the end, this hints that what the Underground Man said was a joke was in fact not a joke and he really believed what he was taking about since he believes the idea that human rationality is frail and must be kept under control with a indestructible palace. So, maybe this entire book is not a waste after-all.
