The
narrator constantly compares the intellectual man to the common man who acts
out of stupidity. According to the man, the intelligent man does know that
justice does not fuel his actions and his conscious never allows him to finish
out anything. By examining every move he makes is carefully planned out by his
conscious but at the same time he will never make up his mind. On the contrary,
the common man is motivated by justice to seek out revenge but will eventually
fail. The main character seems to overanalyze every little detail which never
allows him to actually finish something.
I
found it interesting how the man claims that if he had chosen to be lazy than
have inertia and be constantly aware of everything, then his life would have
been completely different. It was strange to see how he classified laziness as
something positive since most people, like myself, would have classified
laziness as a negative quality that is frowned upon. While I was reading, I
began to look at certain situations differently and I really had to think about
what the man was saying when he described the two types of man. The book, as to
what I have read, makes you question who you are and what your own thoughts are
about certain ideas.
