From the first 10 pages of “Notes from the Underground,” it
is very clear that the narrator is extremely analytical, cynical, pessimistic,
and brutally honest. His thoughts are scattered, and his long sentences have
the tendency to perplex the readers; make them lose their train of thought. Despite
these unorganized and negative thoughts that he writes down, I agree with most
of everything he says. I find it interesting that he knows how stubborn,
negative, and rude he is, but he does nothing to change it, and he knows it. It
is almost as if he is in denial but he is aware that he is in denial which can
be considered contradictory. This mans internal complexities resemble many of
those that most people have, but are not conscious enough to realize they
exist. Though the reading can get tedious at times, I have enjoyed the first
few pages and am interested to see where the narrator is going with his
thoughts, and how they will develop throughout the short novel.
